STELLAR INTRODUCES THE DS101, A SECOND-GENERATION ORBCOMM MODEM FOR USE IN THE MACHINE-TO-MACHINE MARKET
DULLES, VA, May 20, 2008 – Stellar Satellite Communications Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of ORBCOMM Inc. (NASDAQ: ORBC), a global satellite data communications company focused on two-way Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, today announced commercial availability of its newest ORBCOMM satellite communicator, the DS101. This second-generation, two-way satellite transceiver builds on the success of its predecessor, the DS100, with improved performance and numerous functional enhancements.
"We are committed to improving our products and the DS101 is a direct result of working with our customers to improve upon the success of the DS100," said Zvi Huber, General Manager of Stellar. "The DS101 is a perfect fit for customers who want to add a satellite component to their products. This is especially true for those already using terrestrial networks such as GSM/GPRS, but also want the global coverage that only a satellite network can offer."
As a second-generation product, the DS101 includes several performance and functional enhancements over its predecessor, including better radio frequency sensitivity and interference rejection for quick and reliable satellite acquisition; lower power consumption for maximum operating time in power-constrained environments (e.g. battery, solar panel, etc.); a CMOS/TTL UART interface, a standard header connector for cost-effective integration and communication; and a VSWR detector for easier support and maintenance of deployed units.
The DS101 specifically targets machine-to-machine (M2M) applications that require reliable and low-cost data communications from various regions around the world including remote locations. The DS101’s small footprint, efficient power consumption, globally competitive pricing, world-class design and performance make it ideal for a variety of applications including automatic meter reading (AMR), transportation tracking, oil and gas monitoring, security, and many others.
The DS series of satellite subscriber communicators are the result of a joint engineering and manufacturing effort between Stellar and Delphi Corporation. "Delphi’s superior design and manufacturing capabilities allow us to bring automotive OEM quality modems to the M2M market at a very affordable price," said Zvi Huber. "Stellar’s DS101 design is also the basis for the highly anticipated DS401 dual mode platform, hence giving us even greater confidence in our plans to commercialize the dual mode unit in the coming months."
DS101 shipments will commence immediately. The company will continue its support of the DS100 product for the foreseeable future..
