ORBCOMM Announces Three-Year Extension With GE, GE Orders 50,000 Additional Asset Intelligence Units
Dulles, VA, March 15, 2006 - ORBCOMM, a global satellite telecommunications company, today announced that the Asset Intelligence division of GE Equipment Services has placed orders for 50,000 satellite communicators from Stellar Satellite Communications, a wholly owned ORBCOMM subsidiary. GE also extended its International data communications agreement with ORBCOMM for an additional three years and is developing additional applications using the ORBCOMM network, including an application for the rail industry that is expected to be marketed as RailWise™.
“ORBCOMM’s data communications capabilities have enabled GE to create very effective solutions for the transportation industry, starting with VeriWise™ for trailers,” Thomas Konditi, President of GE Asset Intelligence, said. “With ORBCOMM’s technology and global coverage, we will be able to expand beyond trailers to other transportation assets, including railcars and sea containers, and to expand geographically to key supply chain points in Asia, South America and Europe.”
“GE is emerging as a leader in asset monitoring and transportation intelligence solutions, and we are very pleased that ORBCOMM continues to be their wireless data communications partner,” Jerome B. Eisenberg, Chief Executive Officer of ORBCOMM, said. “We expect that GE will continue to be a valuable partner as they expand their product line and enter new geographic markets throughout the world.”
According to Konditi, GE has completed VeriWise installations at the rate of 7,000 units within a 14-day period and currently has the capability to increase that. “GE is the first company I am aware of to complete commercial installations on trailers at this pace,” said Marc Eisenberg, EVP of Sales & Marketing at ORBCOMM. “This is a testament to the quality and reliability of Delphi Electronics and Stellar, the two companies that created the DS300 modem used by GE for VeriWise and, of course, to GE’s ability to deliver its outstanding service.”
